About Steve Lechner

Stephen J. Lechner, M. Ed.

Stephen Lechner, owner and operator of The SCIENCE WORKS!, has been educating and entertaining children and teachers throughout New England for over twenty years. Steve has a degree in Early Childhood Education (Wheelock College, 1986; certified K-3), a Master of Education Degree (Lesley College, 1996; specializing in developing Science Learning Centers), and five years of experience in Museum Education (former Education Director of the Children's and Science Discovery Museums in Acton, MA).

Design and Construction Services

For over ten years Steve Lechner has been designing and constructing kits, exhibits, playspaces and rooms for preschool and elementary education. Some of his work can be seen at The Discovery Museums, where he was Education Director and worked on many of the exhibits. Design credits, in conjunction with the museum staff, include the Rainbow Room, a wall mounted Golf-Ball Track, and the Anchor/Sail Exhibit in the Children's Discovery Museum; and the Crystal Spheres, Magnet Activity Center, Rock and Mineral Activity Corner, and Kaleidoscope Light Box in the Science Discovery Museum. In addition, Steve has created his own unique designs and constructions to delight and educate children of all ages (see below).

 

Other Design/Construction Credits

  • Play Space (Pictured right) - A child-friendly/activity filled space for discovery, built and installed for the Malden-Everett and Medford Family Centers.

  • Light Table (Lower right) - This table features two large, sturdy work surfaces for exploring light and color concepts and phenomena through building, storytelling, or just plain messing about with mirrors and light).

  • Activity Wall Panels - In addition to the panels mentioned above in the play space, there are also a Velcro Activity Panel, a Magnetic Story Activity Panel, a Mirror Activity Panel, a Sound Activity Panel, a Bead Frame Activity Panel, a Gear Frame Activity Panel, and any more that you or I can think of!

  • Bubble Activity Exhibits - A transportable set of bubble activities created to be used in a Mini-Bubble Festival for preschoolers.

  • Rock and Mineral Kit - A collection of "rocks" that not many people will recognize as rocks, but most will recognize from around the house!.

  • Magnet Activity Kit - Featuring magnet exploration exhibits for preschool through elementary aged children.

  • Rolling and Bouncing Activity Kit - A collection of usual and unusual rollers and bouncers, and the ramps and surfaces that help make them go.
